A PERFECT FUSION OF STYLE FOR FAMILY LIVING
Having recently finished their impressive & massive three-year project which has transformed a solid character house into a beautiful, spacious contemporary home has involved renovating their 1930s two-bedroom rough-cast bungalow at 39 Gaine St into a superb family home. At the front they designed & built a gorgeous two-storey addition thereby integrating the best of the old and new. "We kept the old house at the back & dug out the dirt at the front, nearly 400 cubic metres of it," says Scott. From the roadside their house is now transformed into a three-level, four-bedroom, two-lounge, three-bathroom home. The extensive internal garage features a large automatic garage door within which there is space to burn. There is plenty of off-street parking in front. "It is a four-car plus garage with extra storage at the back. The doors are as wide as you can go." Special features abound. At the back of the garage they have installed a very practical shower, toilet & vanity. No sand will end up in the house after a visit to the beach & if you are working in the garage, it's a convenient way to clean up before heading upstairs. There is heaps of space under the stairs for storage & even more to the right of the stairs. Above, up the carpeted stairs, is a high-ceiling open plan lounge, kitchen & spacious scullery. The living area opens on to a sun-bathed deck across the width of the house. The theme throughout is mostly white with touches of black with contrasting wooden benches in the kitchen incorporating its large island bench. The kitchen wants for nothing. Upstairs the large cavity slider doors, which are on the north-facing lounge wall, open up to the outside & spacious the deck. The doors do a disappearing act when fully opened. "We had cavity sliders made so that the doors push back into a false wall," Scott explains. The cladding is sheeting with a textured coating, a modern version of the roughcast on the old house. A veranda extends over half of the deck giving extra protection while the balustrades are solid, providing complete privacy from the road below & neighbours. Exterior lighting has been fitted above the deck & around the side of the home. "The old house is solid concrete so it's built to last. The front windows in the addition are all tinted & double-glazed." A gas heater is plenty to keep the new lounge warm in winter. There are two other gas heaters to warm the rest of the house. Hot water is endless & provided by two infinity systems. A professional chef or keen amateur cook would be right at home in the superbly-appointed kitchen. There is an eye-level microwave-convection oven above a small oven ideal for the two of them while there is a super-sized oven with five gas hobs to make short work of feeding family & guests. "It's great. You can fit big roasts & everything else in there." There are two full-sized dishwashers, one in the kitchen, the other in the scullery & there's also full-sized waste disposal units in both sinks. The space is perfect for the two-door upright fridge-freezer. In the kitchen-sized scullery shelves cover the walls above the wrap-around benches & of course the drinks fridge. The whole of the new house has been fitted with a mains pressure water filter system. An attractive light brown laminate planking covers the kitchen floors & matches the carpet throughout the rest of the house. Up the stairs takes you into what was the old house. The beautiful old lounge has retained its superb patterned plaster ceiling. Scott says they use this lounge to watch telly. Off the foyer is the large guest bedroom. The wide passageway has been retained but they have converted what was once a hallway & porch into an ensuite & a walk-in wardrobe off their master bedroom. They have also kept the ornate glass panelled front door for their ensuite. Across the hallway is the bedroom the grandchildren use when they come to stay. The office, which used to be the kitchen, is next door. They were keen to retain the solid wood tongue-in-groove panelled cupboards. Scott loves the effect of the wood. "It's a nice warm office for me. We wanted to keep all the good character features of the old home." This room could easily be a fourth bedroom. The old family bathroom now has a smart black & white vanity & a decent sized shower. The old wood & plaster ceiling has been waterproofed & there's all the mod-cons including heat lamps, heated towel rail & demister mirror. The old laundry next door has been renovated & fitted with new cabinets, a sink & good-sized bench top. At the rear of the property is the second outdoor space & built-up gardens around the perimeter. There is a generous sized tool shed & clothes line. With the family now down to just the two of them & their project complete, they have regretfully decided to sell up & buy a smaller home in New Plymouth. They have loved living in Gaine St just 10 minutes' walking distance to their regular weekend brunches in the city, their favourite coffee shop just around the corner - Proof & Stock, the Coastal Walkway & Kawaroa pools & playground. Several good schools are nearby, they point out. "AND the neighbours are great".
